Over the past year City staff have been reviewing possible solutions to address concerns from residents on Grantham Avenue South. The concerns relate to vehicle speeds, and more predominantly, illegal large truck traffic on Grantham Avenue South between Queenston Street and Eastchester Avenue.

Traffic study

In response to concerns a traffic study was conducted on the stretch of Grantham Avenue South in 2019. The study found:

  • Average traffic speeds are at, or below, the speed limit: 35 km/h average northbound speed; 39 km/h average southbound speed
  • Most traffic volume, especially southbound, uses the roadway as a connecting through way: 845 northbound, 1,722 southbound vehicles daily
  • Consistent illegal truck traffic, especially southbound: eight northbound, 40 southbound trucks daily

Potential option for mitigation

Staff are investigating the conversion of Grantham Avenue South to one-way, northbound-only traffic from Blair Crescent to Eastchester Avenue as a pilot project for spring 2021.

This would:

  • Reduce total traffic volume by an estimated two-thirds
  • Reduce truck traffic by an estimated 80 per cent

Other potential impacts

The conversion could also create other, potentially adverse, impacts on traffic in the area, including:

  • The potential for increase speeds on Grantham Avenue South
  • The potential for increased emergency response times
  • Alternate routing for traffic leaving and accessing the one-way stretch
  • Diversion of traffic onto other streets

Please watch this short staff presentation to better understand the background and potential impacts of one-way conversion for Grantham Avenue South.

What's next

Residents were invited to leave any feedback or questions in the Questions Tab below and to weigh in via a Quick Poll to let us know if they support, or oppose the project.

Now that the open house has concluded staff will review all feedback and gauge support before any decision is made. Should the pilot project move forward it is anticipated to run from spring 2021 to late fall 2021.
